Craig has worked in engineering and construction for more than twenty years, starting as a Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers craftsman and moving through heavy industry, quarrying, automotive manufacturing and defence engineering before specialising, sixteen years ago, in construction management, quality management and mechanical engineering assurance on major UK programmes.

Across sixteen years in construction management he has held Senior Construction Manager, MEP Construction Manager and Quality Assurance Manager roles on Crossrail; Quality Assurance and Quality Control Manager on the Woodsmith Mine shaft-sinking project for Redpath Mining and Anglo American; client-side Mechanical CRE on the Transport for Wales Taff's Well depot; Quality Manager for Entry Into Service across the Core Valley Lines programme; and Senior Construction Project Manager on the Hagside traction substation for Transport for Greater Manchester. Along the way he has managed workforces of more than 150 people, taken a contractor's business through ISO 9001:2015 certification and delivered residential, commercial, institutional and industrial buildings, office fit-out, modular structures, maintenance facilities and groundworks alongside the rail and mining scope.

His work sits at the point where a contractor's records meet the client's assurance process: the ITP that is returned, the quality plan that is rejected, the handover pack that is missing the one certificate the acceptance panel needs. StructAssure was set up to put that experience at the contractor's disposal before the review, rather than after it.

He is dual-chartered, in construction management and in quality, a qualified ISO 9001:2015 lead auditor and a full member of the Association for Project Management (MAPM), which is why StructAssure offers construction project and package management alongside quality and engineering assurance. That combination is unusual and deliberate: quality assurance on a live project is a construction and project-management problem as much as a documentation one.

Sectors

Where the work has been done

Engineer in PPE inside a tunnel boring machine

Mining and tunnelling

Quality Assurance and Quality Control Manager on the Woodsmith Mine project in North Yorkshire for Redpath Mining and Anglo American: shaft sinking to 1,600 m, among the deepest in the UK. Built and led the project assurance team responsible for construction-phase sign-off, established the quality documentation and inspection regimes aligned to ISO 9001, and supported audit and milestone sign-off in a high-risk underground environment. Also process control across Crossrail tunnelling works, and earlier engineering in quarrying.

Railway track running under a bridge in the UK

Infrastructure and heavy civil

Stations, tunnels, shafts, portals, traction substations, depots and Entry Into Service on Crossrail, the Transport for Wales Core Valley Lines programme, Transport for Greater Manchester's Metrolink network and London Underground. Rail, light rail and the civil engineering that carries them.

Compressed air plant and pipework inside an industrial building

Industrial

New-build industrial units, maintenance facilities, plant and process buildings and heavy-industry engineering, with the mechanical, electrical and civils packages that go with them.

Tower cranes over a commercial construction skyline at sunset

Commercial

Office build and accommodation, retail and mixed-use, from groundworks and frame through building services to handover.

Brick house under construction with blockwork and steel beam

Residential

Housing and residential development: quality regimes, inspection and test planning, and handover documentation that satisfy the warranty provider and the client as well as building control.

Tower crane over a public building under construction

Institutional

Schools, healthcare and other public buildings, where the client's assurance process and the statutory approvals set the standard the documents must meet.

Fit-out in progress with exposed ductwork

Interior design and fit-out

CAT A and CAT B fit-out, interiors and refurbishment: fast programmes with many trades, where the inspection and test regime has to keep pace without slowing the job.

Precast concrete elements on a construction site

Modular and pre-engineered

Off-site manufactured and pre-engineered buildings, where factory quality records and site assembly inspections have to join up into one assurance trail.

Solar panels on the tiled roofs of new homes

Green and sustainable construction

Sustainable building delivery, where performance targets and certification evidence are part of the quality plan from the outset, not collected at the end.

Engineer inspecting red pipework in a plant room

Building services (MEP)

Construction management and quality assurance across pipework, ductwork, drainage, HVAC, electrical systems and test and commissioning, in every sector above. Backed by a manufacturing and defence engineering background that keeps the assurance practical.

Programme experience

Where the standard was learned

Aerial view of a large building under construction with cranes, deliveries and laydown areas Concrete frame with edge protection and scaffolding on a residential block under construction Residential tower under construction in London with a luffing tower crane

Crossrail

Construction management of platform screen door installation, MEP construction management, MEP quality assurance and client-side quality assurance on the Bond Street station build, under one of the most demanding review regimes in UK construction.

Woodsmith Mine, Anglo American

Quality assurance and quality control management for the shaft-sinking contractor: building and leading the assurance team responsible for construction-phase sign-off, inspection regimes and audit-ready evidence in a high-risk underground environment.

Transport for Wales Core Valley Lines

Client-side Mechanical CRE on the Taff's Well depot construction, then Quality Manager for Entry Into Service across the wider programme: assurance documentation, handover packs, verification and validation and close-out ahead of energisation.

Transport for Greater Manchester, Hagside traction substation

Senior Construction Project Manager for the new-build substation: construction-phase delivery, work package plans, task briefings, technical queries, materials control and the assurance evidence and handover dossier for Entry Into Service.

Principles

What you can expect

  • Evidence first. Every system is built around the records that will be inspected, then the procedures that generate them.
  • Cited criteria. Acceptance criteria are measurable and referenced to the governing standard. No "to a satisfactory standard".
  • No client material. Nothing issued or sold by StructAssure is derived from a client's project records or templates. Everything is authored from public standards.
  • Competence declared. Work outside our competence is declined, in writing. Chartered status means being accountable for the advice.
  • Plain reporting. Status is reported as it is. A red item is red until the evidence says otherwise.
